Palais des Papes + My Favorites
Palais des Papes is an impressive structure with a rich history. Once considered 'the most beautiful and powerful mansion in the world', it was once the headquarters of a schismatic group of cardinals who almost overtook the authority of the popes in Rome. For a period of time, Palais des Papes was regarded as the Vatican of the North, as numerous popes resided here, and held extravagent court as they did, with art, culture, prostitution and vice all flourishing. In 1417 the papal court here was disbanded following the election of Martin V. Today, Palais des Popes is a popular attraction. Visitors will see the Chapelle St-Jean and Chapelle St-Martial, which house beautiful frescoes from the 14th century. Also of interest are the Banquet Hall, where the Pope's table sat on the southern end; the Pope's Bedroom, whose walls are decorated in tempera with foliage that sits birds and squirrels; the Stage Room, whose walls were frescoes in the 14th century with hunting scenes; and the Grande Audience Hall, which contains frescoes of the prophets that have been attributed to Giovanetti. Several French-language tours are available. Tours in English are self-guided, and visitors are given handheld audio mechanisms. Address: Place du Palais | Avignon Tel: +33 4 90 27 50 74
